Efficiency First Member — What is Efficiency First?

Efficiency First - Home Performance ContractorEfficiency First is a national nonprofit trade association that unites the Home Performance workforce, building product manufacturers and related businesses and organizations in the escalating fight against global warming and rising energy costs. Efficiency First represents its members in public policy discussions at the state and national levels, to promote the benefits of efficiency retrofitting and to help our industry grow to meet unprecedented demand for quality residential energy improvements.

Effiiency First's mission is to be a voice for the Home Performance industry, and to advocate for policies that will create the foundation for a sustainable and scalable home retrofit market. Residential efficiency improvements can reduce energy waste in most homes by 20 to 40 percent. A nationwide initiative to improve the efficiency of America’s 128 million homes has the potential to unlock significant reductions in building-related greenhouse gas emissions, improve national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and generate long-term energy savings for American consumers. Efficiency First has chapters throughout the United States and sponsors many training activities for Home Performance Contractors.

Build It Green (BIG) — What is Build It Green?

Smart Environmental Solutions from the Ground Up

Build It Green is a membership supported non-profit organization whose mission is to promote healthy, energy- and resource-efficient homes in California.

Established in 2003, it offers a comprehensive package of local government support, professional training, collaboration forums, consumer education, and green product marketing to a range of stakeholders. Three strategic objectives guide our work:

1. Drive policy development:  We partner with government to establish credible and accessible green building policies that promote private sector innovation and provide consistent guidelines statewide.

2. Increase supply of green homes:  We train building professionals on latest best practices and connect green product suppliers with consumers.

3. Stimulate consumer demand:  BIG builds awareness of the benefits of green building by providing GreenPoint Rated as a trustworthy, recognized brand for green homes. Build It Green’s program development strategy has been to incubate good ideas in the San Francisco Bay Area and then expand them statewide, helping to establish California as a role model to other states and the nation for developing pragmatic solutions to environmental challenges. We strive to design our programs to have wide-reaching policy impacts that can positively impact many Californians.

To foster collaboration and accelerate the adoption of green building practices, Build It Green provides a network of councils to bring together stakeholders from key building industries. The councils facilitate learning, encourage advocacy, grow leadership skills, and leverage the capacity of individuals and organizations en masse to work toward mutually beneficial goals. The councils also multiply the impacts of our other programs.

What is Green Building?

Green buildings are sited, designed, constructed, and operated to enhance the well-being of their occupants and support a healthy community and natural environment. In practical terms, green building is a whole-systems-approach to building that includes:

  • Designing for livable communities
  • Using sun and site to the building's advantage for natural heating, cooling, and daylighting
  • Landscaping with native, drought-resistant plants and water-efficient practices
  • Building quality, durable structures
  • Reducing and recycling construction and demolition waste
  • Insulating well and ventilating appropriately
  • Incorporating durablesalvaged, recycled, and sustainably harvestedmaterials
  • Using healthy products and building practices
  • Using energy-efficient and water-saving appliances, fixtures and technologies

When implemented holistically, these strategies serve to preserve our environment for future generations by conserving natural resources and protecting air and water quality. They provide benefits for us today by increasing comfort and well-being and helping to maintain healthy air quality. Finally, green building strategies are good for everyone's pocketbook by reducing maintenance and replacement requirements, reducing utility bills and lowering the cost of home ownership, and increasing property and resale values.
